Steve Amirault is an acadian born, montreal, canada based jazz pianist, vocalist, and composer. Steve is mainly known as an instrumentalist – but he started singing during his performances in 2007 – with his trio formation that included his original compositions and standards. Steve started playing Bongos at 5 years old, drums at 8 and then started playing piano at 12 because he was interested in composition. Steve played piano and sang in rock bands at Saint-Anne du Ruisseau High. A minor accident as child caused him to lose a portion of his index finger on his left hand and forced him to adapt his technique early on. At age 15, Steve studied piano for one year with Vivian Frost and credits her with a pivotal moment in his career when she gave him a pamphlet for piano studies at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish. In 1983, Steve received a Diploma in Jazz Studies from this university.

Steve moved to Halifax when he was 21 years old and his first professional gig was at Pepe’s club with bassist Skip Beckwith. In 1987, Steve received a Canada Council for the Arts Project Grant to study piano in Toronto with Frank Falco. He then moved to Montreal to study piano at Concordia University. In 1988, Steve received a Canada Council Arts B Grant to study piano in New york with pianist / composer Richie Beirach.

Steve lived in New york from 190-1993 and worked with many great musicians. When he returned to Montreal, Steve immersed himself in the rich local scene playing jazz clubs, at a variety of festivals and events.
