Yoel Diaz, renowned pianist, composer and arranger, was born in Holguín, Cuba. After studying percussion in Camaguey at José White College, Diaz taught himself piano and composition, and in 1996, went on to become the musical director for the Alfredo Morales (Chiquitin, a legend of traditional Cuban music) orchestra. As soon as he set foot in Montreal, Canada in 1997, he began to attract the attention of various jazz and Latin musicians, whose praise would eventually lead to his opening for several headliners such as Arturo SandovalTito PuenteEddy Palmieri, and Ray Barreto. 2003 was a year of new beginnings for Diaz, highlighted by his debut performance at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, and the release of his first album, Te llegó, which was praised by fans and critics alike. His latest album, Encuentros, is a testament to this composer’s incredible talent and musical breadth. Since the release of Encuentros in 2010, Yoel Diaz and his Cuban Jazz Session have performed at several festivals across Canada, entertaining fans at every stop with Diaz’s imaginative musical style, embodied by his unique ability to fuse the rhythms of traditional Cuban music with the harmonious sound of contemporary jazz.
